That being said, the set production, the way the movie is filmed, and the acting are all so brutal and realistic that it becomes horrifying to watch. In other words, the situations he's in almost seem too predictable, or I guess, too "cinematic" in order to be believable. Let me clarify: the specific events that happen to the main character (he sacrifices his whole life just to bury a child that isn't his, he survives in so many scenarios that aren't likely for anyone to survive that one becomes to speculate that it's more than luck, etc.). But strangely, it's also terrifying how realistic it is. This film would be amazing if it wasn't so unrealistic. It shows him that life is still out there. Or he smiles because the boy he sees represents life, real life, unlike the constant death, fear, and dread that existed in the crematorium. Either he's happy that he rediscovered a purpose before his death and he's happy that he tried to achieve that purpose. Saul ignores everything else (nothing gives him any emotion, not even the touch of the woman) for the sole purpose of burying this kid properly.Īs for the ending, I felt that Saul smiles at the end for one of 2 reasons. Saul decides to make it his goal to give this kid (who I'm assuming isn't really his son) a proper burial because this kid is the first "human" person in saul's world. The boy coughing so innocently didn't remind me of someone struggling to survive, but someone who had just been resuscitated. But the boy surviving suddenly wakes up a new emotion in him and a new sense of purpose. He's had to learn to see the people as "pieces" rather than humans. I felt that Saul was practically completely emotionless you see this by the formulaic way he handles the bodies and how the camera never shows their faces. Spoilers, don't read on if you don't want to be spoiled: There were some wild scenes where Saul was inches away from death.
